SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting February 12\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, February 12\, at 6:30 for our monthly meeting\, and everyone is invited\, not just members.\nSpeaker: Doug Besler\nTopic: State Fish Hatchery Repairs\, Renovations\, and Trout Stocking Impacts\n\nDoug Besler has worked as a fisheries biologist for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission since 1996 and has been the Mountain Region Fishery Supervisor since 2009. Doug supervises the agency’s fisheries management program in the mountain region of North Carolina (essentially west of I-77). Doug and the talented staff of fisheries biologists he works with manage all gamefish in the area in streams\, rivers\, and reservoirs. He is also responsible for managing the agency’s trout stocking program. Doug lives in Asheville\, NC.\n\n\nThe damage caused by Hurricane Helene to the Armstrong hatchery will take 6-12 months to repair. In the meantime\, the planned renovations at the Setzer hatchery were paused until 2026 as it will have now have to carry the full stocking load in 2025. All the hatchery impacts will create a big challenge for fishery managers as we will continue to provide an uninterrupted trout stocking program through the Armstrong repairs and Setzer renovation.\n\n\nSome changes that will impact trout anglers include reduced stocking numbers\, offline locations due to Hurricane Helene’s impacts\, and altered stocking schedules. The agency is initiating plans to keep all anglers informed of this fluid situation primarily through the agency website\, ncwildlife.org\, and on agency social media.

Leader to match rod length in 3X to 5X. Shorter leaders make casting weighted flies a little easier. If desired\, you can always add more tippet to lengthen leader. \nFlies: \nDH Flies- Typically start unweighted\, if no action\, add weight (split shot) 6″-10″ above fly to get flies down to where the fish are. \nNatural flies- Fish dry flies mid to late afternoon or if you see a hatch coming off. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting May 8\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday May 8\, 2024\, at 6:30 for our monthly meeting and everyone is invited\, not just members. This will be great\, and it is being taught by our own Bob Martin aka The Trout Guy.\n\nBob was born and raised in the Catskills of New York\, known as the birthplace of fly fishing in America. His parents encouraged me to collect and keep many freshwater aquariums\, further fueling his interest in river and pond fish\, amphibians\, reptiles\, and insects.\n\n“My passion for fly fishing grew over time\, and it eventually led me to pursue a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Science from SUNY at Cobleskill”. “I later attended SUNY at Stony Brook for Environmental Science\, where I had the chance to fly fish sea run trout in the Nissequogue River on Long Island”.\n\nBob is excited to share his knowledge and experience with others who are interested in fly fishing. Specifically\, he will be giving a presentation on identifying insects\, minnows\, and other creatures that are important food sources for trout. He will also describe fly selection and how to match the natural food of the trout in the water you are fishing in. During my presentation\, I will demonstrate and describe fly select ion and materials to best match the trout food you need to imitate to be successful.
